What is a psychotherapist?

A psychotherapist is a mental health professional who works with clients to address their problems in living. The medium is talk therapy, which includes insight, exploration of thoughts, feelings and behaviours and how they interact. A psychotherapist in Ontario does not diagnose mental disorder and does not prescribe medication, however they are knowledgeable around symptoms of mental illness and often work with family doctors and psychiatrists to assist patients with management and understanding.

The frequency of sessions is ultimately up to the client. At the beginning of establishing a trusting relationship with the therapist, every 2 weeks (minimum) is recommended.
